One of fourteen generally faint southern constellations originally defined by Lacaille in 1756, with a shape supposedly representing a clock and its pendulum. The constellation runs southward parallel to the southern stretch of the River Eridanus, but its brighteststar, Alpha Horologii, only reaches the relatively faint magnitude of +3.85.
The southern sky is replete with 'mechanical' constellations. The Pendulum Clock is one of these, and like many of the others, it contains only a few faint stars. It lies eastward the brighterstarAchernar in Eridanus.
