At first glance, the globular clusterMelotte 180 appears to have a twin in the sky, but in fact this is not the case. The bright object to its immediate west is not another cluster but a star, specifically the orangegiantFuyue or G Scorpii. The two objects lie on a close line of sight from Earth, but are in fact widely separated in space. Fuyue is about 130 light years from the Sun, while Melotte 180 is more than 39,000 light years distant - or nearly three hundred times farther away than the foreground star.
