Seen from Earth, KMT-2021-BLG-1931 appears to lie on the outer fringes of the Trifid Nebula, M20 in Sagittarius. In fact, the star lies some four times farther from the Sun than the foreground nebula, and its light shines through the nebula's outer gases from a point approaching the central regions of the Milky Way Galaxy.
