Beta Pyxidis

Beta Pyxidis is a yellow star like the Sun, but considerably larger and more massive: its diameter is nearly fifteen times greater than that of the Sun. Despite this, its distance from Earth of more than four hundred light years means that it does not shine brightly in the sky. Nonetheless, with a magnitude approaching 4 it is still clearly visible to the naked eye. Beta Pyxidis belongs to the southern constellation of Pyxis, near that constellation's southern border with neighbouring Vela. It is part of an optical double, with a much fainter star lying on almost the same line of sight.
