This image shows a close-up view of the head of the Dark Emu. Its shining eye is represented by Acrux (the southern star of the Southern Cross), while its head and southward-pointing beak are formed from the dark mass of the Coalsack. The elongated body of the Emu stretches far eastward from here along the Great Rift of the Milky Way, reaching the bird's feet and tail in the region of Scorpius and Sagittarius.
