An asteroid pursuing a relatively circular orbit through the central parts of the Asteroid Belt, Amphitrite takes its name from a goddess of the sea in Greek mythology, the queen to the ocean god Poseidon.
Amphitrite is an irregular but broadly spherical object measuring a little over two hundred kilometres in diameter. It is one of the larger examples of an S-type stony asteroid, a classification that accounts for about a fifth of the asteroids within the main Belt. There are some indications that Amphitrite may possess a satellite, but to date no such moon has been directly observed.
