A general term used to describe the small, rocky bodies of the solar system, sometimes
also called 'minor planets'. Many, but by no means all, orbit the Sun between Mars and
Jupiter, in the so-called Asteroid Belt.
A view of the Asteroid Belt. The large spherical body is Ceres, by far the largest
of the asteroids, but the Belt contains hundreds of thousands of smaller, less regular
bodies.
