A small impact crater in the far northwestern quadrant of the Moon's visible face, Naumann is a circular formation just 9.6 kilometres in diameter. Though small, it lies on an otherwise featureless region of the northern Oceanus Procellarum, and with few prominent features nearby, Naumann stands out against the flat grey surface of the Ocean of Storms.
Some distance northward from Naumann is a grouping of domed highlands known as Mons Rümker, while two other small craters, Lichtenberg and Nielsen, lie away to the southwest and southeast, respectively. The crater Naumann takes its name from the German geologist Karl Friedrich Naumann.
