NotesThis mountain range on the Moon runs for almost four hundred kilometres, separating the wide sea of Mare Serenitatis from a string of lunar lakes that run along the mountains' southwestern side. The mountains are punctuated by several craters, of which the largest is Menelaus, near the southeastern extent of the range.

Originally the Latin name for a part of the Balkan range on Earth, the Haemus Mountains were transferred to the Moon by Hevelius. They define the southwestern 'shore' of the Sea of Serenity, and at their northern end, they meet the much taller and more impressive range of the Apennine Mountains.
