A small but prominent lunar sea, with a surface area of nearly 200,000 square kilometres. Mare Crisium is approximately circular in shape, but its position near the limit of the Moon's visible face means that, from Earth, it appears as a narrow ellipse. Its proximity to the Moon's limb means that it is the first of the maria to appear after a New Moon, forming the 'eye' of the Moon's crescent.
