A prominent crater with terraced walls in the northern central part of the Moon's visible face. Archimedes lies in the southeastern quadrant of Mare Imbrium, the wide Sea of Rains, separating the main sea from Palus Putredinsis, the Marsh of Decay to the southeast. Extending directly southward from the crater is a rugged range of highlands, named the Montes Archimedes after the crater itself.
