A faint fifth magnitude star that lies off the southern edge of Triangulum Australe, the Southern Triangle. Zeta Trianguli Australis lies within a degree of the Southern Triangle's border with the neighbouring contellation of Apus, the Bird of Paradise.
An F-type bright yellow star, Zeta Trianguli Australis is of relatively low mass and absolute magnitude (though it is still slightly more massive and luminous than the Sun). This is based on a composite analysis for the entire system, though in fact the star is a spectroscopic binary. Analysis of the patterns in its spectrum over time show that it consists of two close component stars that circle one another over a period of some thirteen days. The entire system lies just under forty light years from the Sun.
