Zeta1 Scorpii forms a optical double star with Zeta2 Scorpii (or Grafias) to its immediate east. Though they share a 'Zeta' designation, these stars are entirely unrelated, and widely separated in space. Zeta1 Scorpii is an immensely luminous supergiant (estimated to be nearly seven thousand times more luminous than the Sun), but very considerably farther from the Solar System. Its apparent neighbour Zeta2 Scorpii is a much closer giant star, still far more luminous than the Sun, but emitting only a fraction of the energy of distant Zeta1.
