Omega² Scorpii

Omega² Scorpii forms a wide optical double with Omega¹ Scorpii, the brighter blue star to the northwest in this image. As seen from Earth, the two stars are separated by just fourteen minutes of arc, but in actuality they are extremely distant from one another. Based on the most recent parallax data, Omega¹ lies nearly two hundred light years beyond Omega² (Omega¹ nonetheless appears brighter because it is the more luminous of the two stars, emitting nearly four times as much visible light as Omega² Scorpii.)
