A faint star off the shoulder of Orion, near the much brighter Betelgeuse in the sky. Mu Orionis is a white A-type star whose brightness varies by about a tenth of magnitude. This is because it is in fact a binary system, comprised of two stars that orbit each other in a plane parallel with the line of sight from Earth, so that the component stars periodically eclipse one another.
