1 Monocerotis forms a close optical pair with 2 Monocerotis, a rather brighter star to its immediate south. These two stars are relatively close to one another, at an estimated distance of seventeen light years apart, but the giant star 2 Monocerotis is nearly three times as luminous as the cooler subgiant 1 Monocerotis.
