Eta Centauri is a 'shell star', a body whose extremely rapid rotation results in a shell or ring of matter extending out from the star itself. In this case the star'sring system is aligned edge-on to the line of sight from Earth, and the processes that create it cause the luminosity to change in complex patterns.
