The orange overlay image and the slight offset from centre of Gliese 687 in this image represent its proper motion against the background stars. Though a close neighbour of the Sun, Gliese 687 is exceptionally faint (it emits approximately one three hundredth as much light as the Sun). For comparion, the brighter star seen here to the north of Gliese 687, eighth-magnitude HD 160861, is more than a hundred times farther from the Sun, but nonetheless outshines Gliese 687 as seen from Earth.
