Orange giant in Cygnus
Show on Sky Map
The strand of material running from north to south across this image is C34, the Western Veil Nebula, marking the outer western extent of the vast supernova remnant of the Veil Nebula in Cygnus. The nebula is estimated to lie some 1,500 light years from the Solar System, and so forms a distant backdrop to the star 52 Cygni, a little over two hundred light years from the Sun.
