w Centauri

w Centauri falls on a close line of sight with the much brighter second-magnitude star Muhlifain or Gamma Centauri, seen to the southwest in this image. The two stars are separated by just thirteen arcminutes in the sky, but in fact w Centauri is considerably more distant than Muhlifain, lying more than sixty light years farther from the Sun.
