NotesCayrel's Star is an ancient Population II star in the Milky Way's galactic halo, with an estimated age of 12.5 billion years, making it one of the oldest stars known. It originated in the earliest generations of star formation in the Galaxy, before heavier elements had been spread through the interstellar medium, and is thus extremely poor in metals (that is, elements heavier than hydrogen and helium).
