When John Flamsteed delineated the constellation of Monoceros in his Atlas Coelestis, he envisioned the Unicorn's hind legs and tail extending out to the east. For that reason, two of Flamsteed's stellar designations for stars in Monoceros now lie within western fringes of the modern constellation of Hydra. C Hydrae (shown centrally here) is one of these, being also designated 30 Monocerotis. Its neigbours in this image are 1 Hydrae (to the northwest) and 2 Hydrae (to the southeast).
