The three stars of the Beta Monocerotis system appear as a single bright source in the centre of this image. Zooming in closely, it is possible to see that the diffraction spikes (the 'arms' of the cross-shaped artefact) are actually made up from multiple sources of light, in particular Beta Monocerotis A and C, the most widely separated stars of the system.
