Part of the Kids formation within Auriga, the nature of the Almaaz system is still under investigation. It has an unusual pattern of variability, which seems to suggest that the system consists of a primaryF-typebright yellowstar, probably a supergiant, orbited by a less massivestar which is surrounded by a disc of obscuring dust.
At a distance of roughly 2,000 light years from the Sun,
Almaaz is just far enough from the Solar System to be distinguished
on this Galactic scale.
