4 Vulpeculae belongs to the formation of stars known as the Coathanger, Collinder 399. Sometimes known as Al Sufi's Cluster or Brocchi's Cluster, this is not in fact a true cluster, but rather a collection of unrelated stars that happen to form a distinctive shape as seen from Earth. 4 Vulpeculae is the southernmost and brightest member of this group, representing the outer point of the Coathanger's 'hook'.
