The sole confirmed planet of the starKomondor (HAT-P-12) some 463 light years from the Sun in the constellationCanes Venatici. This is a cool and faint star that emits only about a tenth of the energy of the Sun. Puli pursues a rapid, close orbit around this star at a distance of approximately 0.038 AU (that is, about 5.7 million kilometres, or about four per cent of the distance from the Sun to Earth). At such a close distance, Puli orbitsKomondor at extreme speed, completing each orbit of its faint parent star in just over three days.
Puli appears to be a low-massgas giant in structure. Though comparable in size to Jupiter, it has only about a fifth of the mass of that planet (and is therefore very considerably less dense than Jupiter). Though Puli's starKomondor is cool by stellar standards, the planet's close orbit means that it nonetheless receives a great deal of its star's meagre energy. It is therefore classified as a 'hot Jupiter', with an estimated temperature of some 875 K (equivalent to just over 600°C).
Studies of Puli's physical structure suggest that it has a cloudy atmosphere with a layer of haze, and that water is present in this atmosphere, although there is some dispute over these findings. There are also some indications that Puli may share the Komondor system with at least one other planet, though investigations of this data are preliminary.
This planet takes its name Puli from a Hungarian dog breed (and its star Komondor is similarly named after a breed of dog from Hungary).
