M51-ULS-1 is a binary system in an arm of the Whirlpool Galaxy, M51, estimated to lie more than twenty-seven million light years from the Milky Way. The system consists of a massive star orbited by a stellar remnant of some kind, likely a neutron star. The energies produced as matter is sheared from the massive star by the remnant creates a bright X-ray source, and that source is regularly eclipsed by another body within the system. This is taken to indicate the presence of a planet, the first to be discovered in a galaxy beyond the Milky Way. Imagery provided by Aladin sky atlas
