HD 114783 b

HD 114783 is an orange dwarf star, somehwat smaller and cooler than the Sun, lying some 67 light years from the Solar System in the direction of the constellation Virgo. The star lies somewhat to the north of the star Spica, but with a visual magnitude of +7.6, it is too faint to be visible to the naked eye. HD 114783 is known to have at least two planets in orbit around it.

HD 114783 b was the first of these planets to be discovered. It is a large gas giant, considerably more massive than Jupiter, but orbiting much closer to its parent star. To illustrate, if HD 114783 b were part of the Solar System, it would lie approximately halfway between the orbits of Earth and Mars.

Some time after the discovery of this massive gas giant, a second planet was found in the same star system, designated HD 114783 c. Less is known about this second planet: it appears to be another gas giant, but considerably smaller than the 'b' planet, with a mass of no more than about 60% that of Jupiter.
