A faint galaxy of barred spiral shape in the western parts of the constellation Pavo. IC 4800 lies 200 million light years or more from the Milky Way Galaxy, and its spiral form is structured around a very distinct bar running for some 100,000 light years through its core and out to its rim, from the ends of which wispy spiral arms extend.
IC 4800 belongs to a loose group of about thirty galaxies, catalogued as LGG422, that lies scattered throughout the western regions of Pavo. Most of the galaxies in this group form a dense cluster around the bright elliptical galaxy IC 4765, or form a smaller clump to the southeast. IC 4800 is an outlier of the group, widely separated to the east from the more concentrated regions around IC 4765.
