IC 4800 belongs to a loose group of about thirty galaxies, catalogued as LGG422, that lies scattered throughout the western regions of Pavo. Most of the galaxies in this group form a dense cluster around the bright elliptical galaxyIC 4765, or form a smaller clump to the southeast. IC 4800 is an outlier of the group, widely separated to the east from the more concentrated regions around IC 4765.
