Mu Cassiopeiae is a relatively near neighbour of the Sun at a distance of just twenty-five light years. As seen from Earth, it lies close to a brighter, white star to the northeast, Theta Cassiopeiae (actually much more distant than Mu Cassiopeiae, but considerably more luminous). Theta Cassiopeiae is known by the common name Marfak (translated 'elbow'), and the same name is occasionally also used of Mu Cassiopeiae, or of the two stars as a pair.
