Camelopardalis was not a classical constellation of the northern sky, and was first described as late as the seventeenth century. Its name comes from an old name for the giraffe, camelopard or 'spotted camel'. The entire constellation is faint, and its brighteststar, Beta Camelopardalis, only reaches fourth magnitude.
