Wolf-Rayet Stars

W-type Stars

A classification of extremely hot stars with surface temperatures of up to 50,000 Kelvin, nearly ten times that of Earth's Sun. Stars of this type are rare in comparison with other spectral types.

The most prominent Wolf-Rayet star in the skies of Earth is in the Gamma Velorum system, also known as Suhail al Muhlif or Regor. Brilliant Gamma2 Velorum is a binary system, consisting of a massive example of a W-type star, in association with an O-type giant. This Wolf-Rayet star has a temperature of some 90,000 Kelvin, or some nine times the temperature of the Sun. Imagery provided by Aladin sky atlas
