The Southern Ecliptic Pole lies within the southern regions of the constellation Dorado, on the fringes of the Large Magellanic Cloud. This marks the point in the southern hemisphere that is perpendicular to the band of the Ecliptic around the sky.
This diagram shows the orientation of the Ecliptic Poles relative to the plane of the Solar System (that is, the Ecliptic). The Southern Ecliptic Pole lies directly southward at a point 90° from this Ecliptic plane, in the constellation of Dorado.
The Southern Ecliptic Pole lies within the constellation of Dorado, approximately halfway between the stars Delta Doradus (to the west) and Eta1 Doradus (to the east). Imagery provided by Aladin sky atlas
