Brightest Object CataloguedSirius (LHS 219)
NotesA catalogue created by Wilhem Jacob Luyten and originally published in 1979, the Luyten Half-Second Catalogue lists more than four thousand stars with proper motions exceeding half a second of arc (that is greater than one 1,800th of a degree). A revised, more precise edition was produced in 2002, cross-referencing the data in the original list with that from the Hipparcos mission. The work extends that of Ross and Wolf, who also prepared catalogues based on proper motion, but each containing considerably fewer stars than the LHS.

Barnard's Star, a red dwarf in Ophiuchus just six light years from the Sun, is listed in Luyten's Half-Second Catalogue as LHS 57. It is notable as having the highest proper motion of any star in the sky, moving northward relative to its background stars at a rate of ten arcseconds per year (that is, twenty times greater than Luyten's half-second limit). The reticle in this image shows the star's approximate current position, with the blue and orange markers to the south showing its positions in earlier surveys. Imagery provided by Aladin sky atlas
