An open or galactic star cluster that falls with just within the eastern borders of Norma, where that constellation runs against neighbouring Ara. Collinder 304 is a populous cluster containing about 1,100 stars, and lies about five thousand light years from the Solar System.

Imagery provided by Aladin sky atlas

As seen from Earth, the cluster appears against a dense part of the band of the Milky Way as it passes through Norma and Ara (representing a minor arm of the Galaxy known as the Norma Arm). This means that the cluster's stars can be difficult to distinguish from a background busy with the stars of the Milky Way.
