Collinder 102 is an exceptionally sparse cluster, to the extent that it is difficult to distinguish from its background stars. It lies in the same general direction as the Rosette Nebula in Monoceros, whose illuminated gases can be seen to the west (right) of this image. At an estimated distance of some 5,500 light years, the nebula lies almost twice as far from the Sun than the scattered stars of Collinder 102. Imagery provided by Aladin sky atlas
